Presidents’ Roundtable Continued: Law Librarian of the Future

Summary:

What does the law librarian of the future look like? What do three experienced CALL/ACBD leaders working in diverse library types think? Shaunna Mireau (CALL/ACBD Vice President) will facilitate a discussion with Annette Demers (past President of CALL/ACBD and Law Librarian at University of Windsor), Ann Marie Melvie (CALL/ACBD President and Librarian for the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan), and Cyndi Murphy (past President of CALL/ACBD and Knowledge Manager at Stewart McKelvey) to hear their thoughts on the future law librarian. Webinar attendees can join the discussion to share their thoughts on the future and how CALL/ACBD can support the law librarian of the future.

Speakers:

Annette Demers earned her BA (Hons. Law) from Carleton University in 1995, her LLB from the University of Windsor in 1998, and her MLIS from Western in 2002. President of CALL from 2013 – 2015, Annette was appointed as head of the Paul Martin Law Library in August of 2011. Annette has taught Advanced Legal Research for the past several years and has participated in the Northern Exposure to Leadership Institute as a mentor. Annette is the contributing editor of Legal Information Specialists: Guide to Launching and Building Your Career (LexisNexis, 2012) and was part of the core author team for the first and second editions of the Comprehensive Guide to Legal Research, Writing and Analysis (Emond Montgomery, 2013), with Professors Moira McCarney and Ruth Kuras. The third edition is currently in progress.

Ann Marie Melvie is the Librarian at the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan. She received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Saskatchewan and her diploma as a Library Technician from SIAST. Ann Marie began her career in law libraries at a law firm in Saskatoon, and later worked at the Assiniboine Community College library in Brandon, Manitoba. She received her Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alberta in 2001, and joined the staff of the Court of Appeal soon after. As a legal information specialist, Ann Marie maintains and develops the Court’s print and electronic legal resource collection. She also provides in-depth reference services for the judges, law students, and staff of the Court. She is co-author of the Citation Guide for the Courts of Saskatchewan, and current President of the Canadian Association of Law Libraries.

Cyndi Murphy is the knowledge manager in the Halifax office of Stewart McKelvey. She graduated with her MLIS from Dalhousie University and has worked for the law firm for over three and a half decades. An honoured member and past president of the Canadian Association of Law Libraries, she is still actively involved in the Knowledge Management and Private Law Libraries Special Interest Groups, as well as serving on the Copyright Committee. Cyndi has participated in a number of CALL conference panel presentations over the years. A year and a half ago, she spoke on “Matter-Centric Knowledge Management” at the ARK KM conference held in New York. That presentation was reformatted as a chapter in the ARK publication, Innovations in Legal KM. While a young law librarian, Cyndi wrote the chapter “Law Firm Libraries” in the essay collection honouring Diana Priestly, Law Libraries in Canada. That chapter begins, “An examination of the history and development of law firm libraries in Canada reveals a segment of law librarianship in constant change.”

Facilitator: Shaunna Mireau is the Vice-President of the Canadian Association of Law Libraries. She is a legal information specialist and continuous improvement champion. She has worked for private law firms in a variety of roles. As a member of the Edmonton Law Libraries Association, she was deeply involved in the Head Start Program, a legal research seminar for articling students. Shaunna is passionate about the potential law librarians have to positively impact their organizations and our Canadian legal landscape. She believes law librarians are innovators, collaborators, change agents, and trusted advisors. Shaunna enjoys being mostly retired.
