Following up on this thread in our Member Forum - Globe and Mail reports CSC preparing to eliminate all prison librarian positions - I am proud to let you know that I signed on behalf of CALL/ACBD the open letter that was prepared by Book Clubs for Inmates. I am grateful to Amy Kaufman for sharing this news item with the association, and to Karen Sawatzky for speaking to it at the Executive Board so that we could lend our voice in support of this important cause.

As this example shows, our Member Forum is the space to share news and items of interest to your colleagues from coast-to-coast-to-coast, and I look forward to reviewing more of your forum postings.

Looking ahead, and following on the elections that were held last month, it is my pleasure to announce your Executive Board for 2026/2027:

All these efforts by so many individuals contribute to the sustained governance of our organization, and I am humbled to continue my service as past-president to you and your new board who will officially take office at the end of the AGM in May.

Pour faire suite au fil de discussion dans notre Forum des membres, portant sur un article du Globe and Mail selon lequel le SCC se prépare à abolir les postes de bibliothécaires dans les pénitenciers, je suis fier de vous faire savoir que j’ai signé au nom de la CALL/ACBD la lettre ouverte qui a été préparée par l’organisme Book Clubs for Inmates. Je tiens à remercier Amy Kaufman d’avoir informé l’association de cette nouvelle ainsi que Karen Sawatzky d’en avoir parlé au conseil exécutif afin que nous puissions appuyer cette cause importante.

Cet exemple montre que notre Forum des membres est une plateforme d’échange permettant de partager des nouvelles et des sujets d’intérêt avec vos collègues d’un bout à l’autre du pays, et je suis impatient de lire les messages que vous publierez sur le forum.

Pour ce qui est de l’avenir, et à la suite des élections qui ont eu lieu le mois dernier, j’ai le plaisir de dévoiler les membres du conseil exécutif pour 2026-2027.

The Canadian Law Library Review (CLLR), the official journal of CALL/ACBD, is looking for an additional Feature Article Editor. The Feature Article Editor will work in tandem with the current Feature Article Editor to solicit, review, peer-review (if needed), and copy edit feature article submissions to CLLR. The time commitment varies, with a maximum of 10–12 hours per issue (three issues per year). Responsibilities include: Soliciting article submissions (posting to relevant listservs and forums, contacting people based on their research/conference presentations, reaching out to law schools and library schools for student submissions, etc.) Corresponding with authors (confirming receipt of articles, notifying authors of acceptance or rejection, etc.) Reviewing each accepted article (copy editing, recommending non-substantial changes to improve article quality, checking citations and sources, etc.) Peer reviewing articles if requested (locating peer reviewers, ensuring identifying information is removed from articles, managing the process, etc.) Submitting final drafts of articles to the CLLR Editor by the internal deadline This is a perfect position for those early in their careers and more established professionals alike. Previous publishing experience isn't required; however, applicants should have strong writing, editing, and citation skills. As we mark the start of 2026, our association’s annual membership drive also begins (my thanks to those of you who have already renewed your memberships). Related to the value of your membership, we are currently finalizing the details of an exciting new partnership that will deliver real value for each of you who renew - look out for the official announcement in your inboxes in the coming weeks!

Over the Holidays, I received a petition from a segment of our motivated and dedicated members to constitute a new special interest group (SIG) and I look forward to making a more formal announcement to you all soon.

SIGs are the organic communities of practice that form a vital part of our association, and all it takes to start one is 10 or more members with a shared interest (in anything!) declaring their interest in an email to office@callacbd.ca. In turn, your Executive Board and National Office supports SIGs by providing various administrative supports, including: space on the website, access to Basecamp to organize files and manage projects, use of the organizational Zoom account for meetings and events, the option to have meeting space at the annual conference, coordinating funding opportunities and budget requests for SIG activities, and more.

The new calendar year also marks a new fiscal year for our association, and as your executive board continues its work in managing both sides of the organizational balance sheet, I welcome your ideas to explore new and different revenue streams - these ideas may be submitted to office@callacbd.ca.

Alors que nous entamons l’année 2026, la campagne annuelle de renouvellement de l’adhésion à notre association est déjà commencée (je remercie les personnes qui ont déjà renouvelé leur adhésion). À propos de la valeur de votre adhésion, nous sommes en train de finaliser les détails d’un nouveau partenariat très intéressant qui offrira une valeur réelle à chaque personne qui renouvellera son adhésion. Surveillez l’annonce officielle dans votre boîte de réception au cours des prochaines semaines !

Pendant les Fêtes, j’ai reçu une pétition de la part d’un groupe de membres motivés et dévoués afin de créer un nouveau groupe d’intérêt spécial (GIS). Je suis impatient de vous annoncer plus officiellement ce projet très bientôt.

Les GIS sont des communautés de pratique organiques qui constituent une partie vitale de notre association. Pour créer un groupe, il suffit que 10 membres ou plus partageant un intérêt commun (dans n’importe quel domaine) et qu’une déclaration d’intérêt soit acheminée par courriel à office@callacbd.ca. En retour, le conseil exécutif et le bureau national soutiennent les GIS en leur fournissant diverses ressources administratives, notamment un espace sur le site Web, l’accès à Basecamp pour organiser des fichiers et gérer des projets, l’utilisation du compte Zoom de l’association pour les réunions et les événements, la possibilité de disposer d’une salle de réunion au congrès annuel, la coordination de possibilités de financement, les demandes de budget pour les activités des GIS, et bien d’autres services.

La nouvelle année civile marque également un nouvel exercice financier pour notre association. Alors que votre conseil exécutif poursuit la gestion des deux colonnes du bilan de l’organisation, je vous invite à me faire part de vos idées visant à explorer de nouvelles et différentes sources de revenus. N’hésitez pas à transmettre vos idées à office@callacbd.ca.

The most recent issue of the Canadian Law Library Review has been published.

It is the official journal of the Canadian Association of Law Libraries and appears in open access format three times per year (March, July, November).

Le numéro le plus récent de la Revue canadienne des bibliothèques de droit vient d'être publié.

Il s'agit de la revue officielle de l’Association canadienne des bibliothèques de droit. Elle est publiée en accès libre trois fois par année (mars, juillet, novembre).

Le texte français suit. Following the incredible success of our inaugural program, LLI is BACK for its second run, led once again by the incomparable Annette Demers. The program will kick off on January 19, 2026 with our first virtual meet up. Lessons will be released every two weeks, with regular recap virtual meet ups. The LLI then wraps up in Moncton, with an in-person workshop and the pre-conference session. Optional courses will return after the CALL/ACBD conference. A reminder that the virtual portion of the LLI is FREE for all CALL/ACBD members. A certificate of completion will be given out to those who complete the entire virtual program as well as the in-person workshop within two calendar years. You do not need to complete all sessions unless you would like to obtain a certificate of completion. À la suite de l’incroyable succès de notre programme inaugural, le LLI est de RETOUR pour une deuxième édition, dirigée une fois de plus par l’incomparable Annette Demers. Les leçons seront publiées toutes les deux semaines, accompagnées de rencontres virtuelles régulières pour des récapitulatifs. Forgive me for making my remarks this month about generative AI. As overdone and tiresome a topic it may be to some of you, it has become the biggest subject of preoccupation for me this past month.

Among other things, while I was attending a local gathering of science and engineering librarians, I was heartened to hear that our counterparts are also grappling with similar genAI-related issues as we are. What’s more, as the shortcomings of genAI become more apparent and as people become increasingly fed up with “AI slop,” we have a window of opportunity to engage with our stakeholders on our terms and in our role as longtime experts in information literacy, effective searching, and information stewardship. To this end, if you need some talking points about being cautious with genAI, allow me to recommend the “AI is very bad, actually: A manifesto" (and it even conveniently folds into a wallet-sized leaflet).

Back in our world, our colleagues on the CALL/ACBD AI Working Group have unveiled their AI in Legal Research & Writing Applications Assessment Guide after months of hard work and careful deliberation. As an open access publication, allow me to amplify the AI Working Group’s call to circulate the guide far and wide to your stakeholders, with the reminder that CALL/ACBD is on their side in helping them to procure, evaluate, compare, and manage AI as the technology and discourse around it evolves.

Remember: “don't just adopt AI - take control of it.”

Bonjour à tous les membres de la CALL/ACBD !

Pardonnez-moi de revenir sur l’IA générative ce mois-ci. Même si ce sujet peut sembler exagéré et lassant pour un certain nombre d’entre vous, il est devenu ma plus grande préoccupation le mois dernier.

Entre autres, lors d’une réunion régionale réunissant des bibliothécaires en sciences et en génie, j’ai été réconforté d’entendre que nos homologues étaient aussi aux prises avec des problèmes similaires aux nôtres en matière d’IA générative. En outre, à mesure que les lacunes de l’IA générative deviennent plus apparentes et que les gens en ont de plus en plus ras-le-bol du « contenu dégénératif » (AI slop), nous disposons d’un créneau pour dialoguer avec nos acteurs à notre manière et à titre de spécialistes de longue date en matière de littératie informationnelle, de recherche efficace et de gestion de l’information. À cette fin, si vous avez besoin de points de discussion pour aborder la prudence avec l’IA générative, permettez-moi de vous recommander l’infographie "AI is very bad, actually: A manifesto" (offerte en format de poche, ce qui est très pratique).

De notre côté, nos collègues du groupe de travail sur l’IA de la CALL/ACBD ont dévoilé leur Guide d’évaluation des applications d’IA dans la recherche et la rédaction juridiques après plusieurs mois de travail intense et de mûre réflexion. Comme il s’agit d’une publication en accès libre, permettez-moi de promouvoir l’appel du groupe de travail sur l’IA pour que ce guide soit largement diffusé auprès des acteurs, en leur rappelant que la CALL/ACBD est là pour les aider à faire l’achat, l’évaluation, la comparaison et la gestion des applications d’IA au fil de l’évolution de cette technologie et du discours qui l’entoure.

Et rappelez-vous : « Ne vous contentez pas d’adopter l’IA, prenez-en le contrôle. »
